Parents of athletes invited to enrichment workshop

Parents of student athletes are invited to attend a free workshop this Thursday to learn how to help their students get the most out of their sports experience.

"It addresses how parents can help coaches and league administrators establish and maintain a positive competitive environment,” HJUHSD Superintendent Bill Fishbough said. “The workshop also gives parents tips for discussing occurrences in college and professional sports with their student to bring out life lessons."

The workshop is hosted by the Positive Coaching Alliance, a Stanford University-based non-profit organization developed to teach parents, coaches and organizational leaders how to effectively work with young athletes while instilling the values of teamwork, discipline, respect and goal-setting.

"Working with hundreds of youth and high school sports organizations around the United States, we've developed practical tools and guidelines to help these student athletes, their coaches and parents realize that winning is not only reflected in game scores but also in the effort players give, the learning and improvement they achieve, and the ability they develop to bounce back from mistakes,” said Jim Thompson, founder and director of Positive Coaching Alliance. “We’re excited that the Hanford Joint Union High School District recognizes the tremendous potential sports participation offers for today’s student athletes and is working to realize that potential by emphasizing a positive District culture for their players, coaches, and parents.”

The workshop is open to all parents of Hanford High, Hanford West High and Sierra Pacific High student athletes.

The District will also be hosting workshops for student athletes at HHS, HWHS and SPHS during the school day, to promote the Positive Coaching Alliance message.

For more information, please call the HJUHSD Superintendent’s Office at 583-5901, ext. 3101.

About Positive Coaching Alliance:

Founded as a non-profit within the Stanford University Athletic Department in 1998, Positive Coaching Alliance (PCA) has the mission of “transforming high school sports so sports can transform the student.”

To that end, PCA has conducted nearly 9,000 live group workshops nationwide for more than 475,000 youth and high school sports leaders, coaches and parents. Workshop attendees have helped create a positive, character-building sports environment for roughly 3.5 million youth and high school athletes. PCA’s partnership network includes more than 1,700 youth and high school sports organizations, cities and schools. In 2011, PCA will conduct roughly 1,300 live, group workshops across the U.S., while assisting tens of thousands of other individuals via online workshops at www.PositiveCoach.org.

PCA trains coaches to be Double-Goal Coaches®, whose first goal is winning and whose second, more-important goal is teaching life lessons through sports. PCA also cultivates Second-Goal ParentsTM, who focus on life lessons through sports and helps produce Triple-Impact CompetitorsTM, student-athletes who work to improve themselves, their teammates, and their sport as a whole. PCA has the support of elite coaches and athletes on a National Advisory Board including Los Angeles Lakers Coach Phil Jackson, Boston Celtics Coach Doc Rivers and dozens of others.
