Foggy Day Schedule
Daily Foggy Day Schedule Information is available at 559.583.5909 and on Channel 18.
- Plan A: Buses delayed 1 hour - Schools starts at 8:55 a.m.
- Plan B: Buses delayed 3 hours - Schools starts at 8:55 a.m.
- Plan C: Morning Buses Cancelled - Schools starts at 8:55 a.m.
- Shuttles between HH / HW at 8:30 a.m.
Foggy Day Bell Schedule
Foggy Day Schedules are announced on a day-to-day basis. Parents/guardians must send a note if students are late due to fog.
It is the responsibility of the HJUHSD Transportation Department to decide whether or not to call a foggy day schedule for Hanford High, Hanford West High and Sierra Pacific High School and Earl F. Johnson High. The transportation department makes that decision based on a number of factors, including input from other local school transportation departments and observation of outlying areas. Because of the nature of our Valley fog, this can be a difficult decision to make: It is often foggy in one area while clear in another, fog can shift from one area to another quickly or can clear up just minutes after the call is made. But the key factor in making the decision to call a foggy day schedule is the safety of the students we transport. The question that the transportation department must answer is whether or not - at the time the determination is made - visibility is impaired to the extent that it may present a hazard to our students riding the buses.
Once a foggy day schedule is called, it cannot be reversed.
Help keep our students safe: Please turn on your headlights!

9 a.m. Oct 30
From the Hanford Sentinel:
Although the investigation is not complete, Sever said they believe the object the teacher saw was possibly a tripod. “A [student] was carrying a tripod in the same general area that the student was believed to be seen with a rifle,” he explained. “We have found no evidence that any student was on campus with any firearm or weapon of any type.” Around 5 p.m., all students and staff had been released from the campus. Sever said it is safe for parents to send their students to school Thursday. He also said additional officers will be on campus.
4:20 p.m. Oct 29

At approximately 3:15 p.m., Hanford High School went into Secure Campus Mode following a report of a person with a possible weapon on campus. Hanford Police responded and are investigating. School is proceeding normally today and - in keeping with our School Safety Plan - we are working closely with police to ensure student safety.
Law enforcement agencies are increasing patrols around our schools today, access to our campuses is closely monitored, and administration and staff are being extra vigilant in watching for any signs of danger.
If you have any concerns or information you would like to share, you can call your school office to speak with an administrator.

Health Alert: Pertussis (Whooping Cough) at Hanford West High School
Hanford West High School students may have been exposed to pertussis (whooping cough): There is one confirmed case of pertussis at Hanford West High School.
Pertussis is an infection that affects the airways and is easily spread from person to person by coughing or sneezing. Its severe cough can last for weeks or months, sometimes leading to coughing fits and/or vomiting. Anyone can get pertussis, but it can be very dangerous for infants and people with weakened immune systems. Family members with pertussis, especially mothers, can spread pertussis to newborns.
Recommendations:
Protection against pertussis from the childhood vaccine, DTaP, decreases over time. Older children and adults, including pregnant women, should get a pertussis booster shot called “Tdap” to protect themselves and infants near or around them.
If you need the “Tdap” vaccine, contact your doctor or call the Kings County Health Department at 584-1401 to find a vaccine provider near you.
If you have any questions or concerns contact the Kings County Health Department at the number above or the School Nurse at 559-583-5902, ext. 4027.

Recommendations:
- If your child has a cough:
- Keep your child home from school and activities, such as sports or play groups. See items 4 and 5 about when your child can return to these activities.
- Make an appointment with your child’s doctor as soon as possible and tell the doctor that your child may have been exposed to pertussis.
- If your child has been told by a doctor that they have a weakened immune system ask your child’s doctor to prescribe antibiotics to your child as soon as possible to prevent pertussis. Antibiotics should be given to a child with a weakened immune system if they may have been exposed to pertussis, even if he or she is not coughing.
- If your child lives with any of the following people and may have been exposed to pertussis, ask your child’s doctor to prescribe antibiotics as soon as possible to your child, even if he or she is not coughing:
- A woman who is pregnant
- An infant younger than 12 months old
- Anyone with a weakened immune system
- If your child has been diagnosed with pertussis by his or her doctor:
- Tell the school that your child has been diagnosed with pertussis.
- School officials may request that you keep your child home from school and activities, such as sports or play groups, until your child has been on antibiotics for five days to treat pertussis.
- Ask your child’s doctor for a note that states your child has pertussis.
- If your child’s doctor says your child does NOT have pertussis:
- Ask for a note from the doctor telling the school that your child’s cough is NOT pertussis and that your child can return to school and other activities at any time.

Parents, students, staff and community members are invited to the first HJUHSD Local Control Accountability Plan (LCAP) Meeting March 13
Parents and community members are invited to share their ideas about local educational priorities at the Hanford Joint Union High School District’s first Local Control Accountability Plan (LCAP) meeting:
The LCAP is part of a revolutionary change in the way the State of California allocates funding to local school districts. Under the new Local Control Funding Formula (LCFF), state funding for schools is designed to be more flexible, allowing for more local control over academic spending priorities.
Full implementation of the new state funding formula will take several years, but school districts all over the state are beginning the process now with the development of their Local Control Accountability Plans (LCAP).
With input from local families and community members, HJUHSD will create a three-year LCAP that will be adopted by the Board of Trustees by June 30, 2014. The LCAP will be based on local student needs and will serve as a roadmap of academic priorities, driving the District’s annual spending plans. It will identify annual academic goals and specific actions for implementing those goals and will identify methods of measuring student progress based on performance indicators set by the State.
This first planning meeting will be an opportunity for parents and other stakeholders to learn more about the LCFF and LCAP process and how to be a part of it. Parents, students, staff and other community members are a vital requirement of the development of the LCAP. HJUHSD needs input from all of its stakeholders as to what academic goals would be the most effective in helping all of our students meet the State priorities.
In addition to this initial informational meeting, community members will be invited to provide input in a series of future meetings, AND the District has created an online survey that all school stakeholders are invited to complete. The results of the survey and other community input will be shared via the HJUHSD Website, as will the final LCAP that will be presented to the Board for approval.
Additional information about the LCFF and LCAP is also available on the California Department of Education Website: Local Control Funding Formula and at the HJUHSD LCAP FAQ
For more information about LCFF or LCAP or about the March 13 LCAP Meeting, please contact: Bobby Peters, Coordinator of Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment at bpeters@hjuhsd.org

Boom! The glass plate was thrown across the room. A slap against his face. This night is horrible. I will always remember his crazy family.
The Last
by Breanna Calderon
Honorable Mention
The world was at its end. As the last survivor, I closed my eyes in shame. I took my last breath, and history became worthless.
Waking up to Shame
by Christian Martinez
Honorable Mention
Deafening silence. I strain my ears, praying there might be someone else still alive. The only noise I hear are the voices in my head. --
Solo
by Katrina Dollete

She sat alone at the piano, playing the last song they played together. Pain grew with each key she pressed. The bench felt quite lonely.
