HJUHSD libraries host California Young Reader Medal Program

The HJUHSD Libraries' California Young Reader Medal (CYRM) program is off and running for 2014.

The three CYRM books chosen this year by the state committee are

Divergent by Veronica Roth, Revolution by Jennifer Donnelly, and The Running Dream by Wendelin Van Draanen.

Students are invited to read all three books and turn in an evaluation for each, which will be read by Mrs. Bennetts, HJUHSD Teacher Librarian. Prizes are awarded for each completed report and students who read all three books will be invited to a pizza party where voting takes place to determine which book the students in the HJUHSD like best. The final tally is submitted to the state level where votes from all over California are tabulated, and a CYRM author winner will be announced in the spring. The program will conclude on Wednesday, March 19, so be sure to come into your Library and join in the fun!

I Forgot my Name
Luis Lepez-Orozco
1st Place
The hospital said it was a concussion. Might be permanent memory loss. Can't even remember my own name which is handy considering who I am.

Crazy
by Alana Alvarez
1st Place
Boom! The glass plate was thrown across the room. A slap against his face. This night is horrible. I will always remember his crazy family.

The Last
by Breanna Calderon
Honorable Mention
The world was at its end. As the last survivor, I closed my eyes in shame. I took my last breath, and history became worthless.

Waking up to Shame
by Christian Martinez
Honorable Mention
Deafening silence. I strain my ears, praying there might be someone else still alive. The only noise I hear are the voices in my head. --

Solo
by Katrina Dollete
Honorable Mention
She sat alone at the piano, playing the last song they played together. Pain grew with each key she pressed. The bench felt quite lonely.
