Online Gradebook Security Update

Parents, students and other users with HJUHSD Online Gradebook accounts will be required to change passwords on your next login as part of a system security update.

The Online Gradebook (ABI) will prompt you to enter your OLD password and then enter your NEW password twice, to make the change.

If your OLD password comes up automatically in the "Old Password" field, please highlight and delete that password and re-enter the old password manually.

If you have trouble changing your password, please email your school Testing Secretary (see contact information below) with: Your name, your student's name and your school name, explaining your problem.

We apologize for any inconvenience and appreciate your cooperation.

Testing Secretaries:

HELPFUL HINTS FOR STRONG PASSWORDS

Do NOT write down your password in an unsecure location (i.e.: in a desk drawer, in your wallet or in an unsecure file on your computer) … even better, don’t write it down at all.
    • If you have to write SOMETHING down to help you remember your password, instead write down an obscure HINT that will remind YOU of your password, but NOT mean anything to someone else.
    •  OR use a secure password management program, such as Roboform or ewallet
  • DO create a strong password
    • Use lowercase AND uppercase letters
    • Use more than 8 characters
    • Use your whole keyboard – combinations of letters, numbers, punctuation and other and special characters make for a stronger password.
    • BUT, for an even stronger password, try not to use “common” letter-to-symbol conversions, such as “E” to “3” or “S’ to $” or “to” to “2”
  • Do NOT use the same password for everything: You might not mind so much if someone steals the password to your streaming music site … but if that is also the password to your online banking account, you’ll be much more concerned.
  • DO change your passwords often: Microsoft recommends every 3 months.
  • DO use a “passphrase”. METHOD #1:
    • Start with a "random" sentence that you will remember:
      • Complex passwords are safer.
    •  Remove spaces between the words
      •  complexpasswordsaresafer
    • Randomly capitalize a few letters
      •  complexpaSSwordSareSafer
    • Replace at least one letter with a number or symbol.
      •  c0mple&paSSwordS@reSafer
  • DO use a “passphrase”. METHOD #2:
    • Think of a sentence at least 8 words long that is unusual, yet easy for YOU to remember
      • My Dalmatian, Charlie, loves rawhide bones and long naps
    • Shorten it the first letter of every word in that sentence
      • mdclrbaln
    • capitalize at least one letter
      • mdClrbalN
    • change at least one letter to a number or special character
      • mdClrb@lN

HOW SECURE IS YOUR PASSWORD?

Pay particular attention to the difference between using only lowercase characters and using all possible characters (uppercase, lowercase, and special characters – like @#$%^&*). HHS Teachers Incorporating Larry Bell’s 12 Powerful Words

Hanford High School staff recently received professional development on Larry Bell’s 12 Powerful Words. Bell was a high school teacher at a school with more than 3,000 students and 36 different languages. He has been recognized for his innovative classroom strategies that allowed his students to excel.

The 12 powerful words can help students in several ways. First, these are higher order thinking skill words. They cause all students to think at the highest level possible. By asking teachers to model these 12 powerful words in daily conversation, questioning, and on tests and quizzes, all students will be exposed to them all year long so they are not intimidated by them when they appear on their STAR exams in the Spring. These are “power verbs” because they empower students with knowledge and confidence.

We encourage you to incorporate these words in your conversations with your students. Total immersion of these words will allow our students to continue to succeed.
  • Trace– List in steps
  • Support– Back up with details
  • Analyze– Break Apart
  • Explain– Tell how
  • Infer– Read between the lines
  • Summarize– Give in short version
  • Evaluate– Judge
  • Compare– All the ways they are alike
  • Formulate– Create
  • Contrast– All the ways they are different

Survey: Parent, student and staff input needed!

The Hanford Joint Union High School District needs parent, student and staff input as part of our grant application for the 21st Century ASSETs (After School Safety and Enrichment for Teens) Program.

This grant is made available through the California Department of Education. If awarded the grant, HJUHSD could receive more than $900,000 to provide an after school program for HJUHSD students.

The ASSETs Program would allow the District to provide activities/classes for students that provide academic assistance such as tutoring and homework support, enrichment and family literacy. Students would start the After School Program, which would run Monday through Friday from 3:30 p.m. until at lest 5 p.m. with a healthy snack and then choose from a variety of academic or enrichment classes to attend. Students would also able to participate in several types of physical activities. A Credit Recovery Program would likely be offered for students needing to earn credit for graduation.

To successfully apply for the grant, the District needs to describe and identify collaborative partners - parents, students and teachers. Please help us by taking five minutes to complete the following survey before November 23

The survey will allow you to have input into the types of classes and activities the District would be able to provide for students through this program. Thank you in advance for your time and input!

Hanford FFA wins national honors

Hanford FFA members came home with multiple awards from the 84th National FFA Convention in Indianapolis last month.

The Hanford FFA Chapter submitted its state-winning national chapter application to the National FFA Chapter Award program in June and was recognized as a 3-star winner during the national convention - the highest rating a chapter can be awarded.

The National FFA Chapter Award program, sponsored by John Deere, recognizes FFA chapters for developing and conducting a detailed Program of Activities. Each activity provides opportunities for members to excel in one of three areas: Student, chapter or community development. Every year, chapters are recognized as having earned a one, two, or three-star rating on their application.

In addition to the chapter recognition, Hanford FFA member William Brewster Jr. was the National Winner of Agricultural Processing Entrepreneurship Award, earning a $500 prize for his accomplishment.

Fifteen Hanford FFA Chapter Members received the highest honor the National FFA awards - the American FFA Degree. Five of those members traveled to Indianapolis to accept their degrees: Tyler Beck, Val Evans, Phillip Nunes, Kristyn Torres and Lee Wisecarver.

The American FFA Degree recognizes demonstrated leadership ability and outstanding achievements in agriculture business, production, processing or service programs. To be eligible, members must have earned and productively invested $7,500 through a supervised agricultural experience (SAE) program in which they start, own or hold a professional position in an existing agriculture enterprise and serve 50 community service hours. Recipients must also make it their mission to demonstrate outstanding leadership abilities and community involvement. Each award recipient received a Gold American FFA Degree key, and a certificate in a blue leatherette frame. Of the 540,379 FFA members nationwide, the 15 Hanford FFA Chapter members were among only 3,241 to be recognized in 2011.

“The Hanford community should be very proud of our FFA chapter for many accomplishments both as individuals and as a chapter during the 84th National FFA Convention,” FFA advisor Lilly Pimentel said.

Parents of athletes invited to enrichment workshop

Parents of student athletes are invited to attend a free workshop this Thursday to learn how to help their students get the most out of their sports experience.

"It addresses how parents can help coaches and league administrators establish and maintain a positive competitive environment,” HJUHSD Superintendent Bill Fishbough said. “The workshop also gives parents tips for discussing occurrences in college and professional sports with their student to bring out life lessons."

The workshop is hosted by the Positive Coaching Alliance, a Stanford University-based non-profit organization developed to teach parents, coaches and organizational leaders how to effectively work with young athletes while instilling the values of teamwork, discipline, respect and goal-setting.

"Working with hundreds of youth and high school sports organizations around the United States, we've developed practical tools and guidelines to help these student athletes, their coaches and parents realize that winning is not only reflected in game scores but also in the effort players give, the learning and improvement they achieve, and the ability they develop to bounce back from mistakes,” said Jim Thompson, founder and director of Positive Coaching Alliance. “We’re excited that the Hanford Joint Union High School District recognizes the tremendous potential sports participation offers for today’s student athletes and is working to realize that potential by emphasizing a positive District culture for their players, coaches, and parents.”

The workshop is open to all parents of Hanford High, Hanford West High and Sierra Pacific High student athletes.

Positive Coaching Alliance Workshop
6 p.m. - 7:30 p.m.

The District will also be hosting workshops for student athletes at HHS, HWHS and SPHS during the school day, to promote the Positive Coaching Alliance message.

About Positive Coaching Alliance:

Founded as a non-profit within the Stanford University Athletic Department in 1998, Positive Coaching Alliance (PCA) has the mission of “transforming high school sports so sports can transform the student.”

To that end, PCA has conducted nearly 9,000 live group workshops nationwide for more than 475,000 youth and high school sports leaders, coaches and parents. Workshop attendees have helped create a positive, character-building sports environment for roughly 3.5 million youth and high school athletes. PCA’s partnership network includes more than 1,700 youth and high school sports organizations, cities and schools. In 2011, PCA will conduct roughly 1,300 live, group workshops across the U.S., while assisting tens of thousands of other individuals via online workshops at www.PositiveCoach.org.

PCA trains coaches to be Double-Goal Coaches®, whose first goal is winning and whose second, more-important goal is teaching life lessons through sports. PCA also cultivates Second-Goal ParentsTM, who focus on life lessons through sports and helps produce Triple-Impact CompetitorsTM, student-athletes who work to improve themselves, their teammates, and their sport as a whole. PCA has the support of elite coaches and athletes on a National Advisory Board including Los Angeles Lakers Coach Phil Jackson, Boston Celtics Coach Doc Rivers and dozens of others.

HHS Drama presents "The Diary of Anne Frank"

HHS PRESENTS:
The Diary of Anne Frank
by By Frances Goodrich and Albert Hacket, Adapted by Wendy Kesselman
at the Stratton Tarvin Presentation Center
7:30 p.m. Oct 13-15 and 19-21
$5 for students, $7 for adults

The Hanford High Shool Drama Club will present The Diary of Anne Frank this month.

This is the autobiographical drama of a young Dutch Jewish girl hiding from the invading Nazis during World War II. Anne and her family share a claustrophobic attic with another family. Tension is often unbearable, as the people hiding know that their discovery by the enemy could lead to almost certain death at the hands of their captors. They also must contend with the Dutch Gestapo or "Green Police," who will turn them over to the Nazis if discovered. Dutch nationals risk their lives by hiding the family for two years. The group, despite the horror and crowded conditions, still find time for celebrations of Hanukkah and rejoice quietly in the small attic that has become their world. The story is told from the narrative perspective of Anne, a young girl hoping to live to womanhood.

For more information, please contact Mrs. Bianca Ankrum at bankrum@hjuhsd.k12.ca.us or 559-583-5902, ext. 8459.

Trustee Area Re-Districting

In the upcoming weeks, the Hanford Joint Union High School District Board of Trustees will be discussing and adopting new Trustee Area boundaries in light of the 2010 Federal Census.

Every ten (10) years school districts must determine if population changes within the trustee areas require redistricting. The school district is mandated by law to adjust area boundaries if population is not apportioned equally among the five trustee areas. The equal protection clauses of the United States and California Constitutions require that each person’s vote be entitled to substantially equal representation from his or her representatives. Reynolds v. Sims (1964) 84 S.Ct. 1362, 1381. This is known as the “one person, one vote” rule. Absolute equality is not required, but equal protection demands that the trustee districts be apportioned as equal as possible.

After a preliminary review, we have determined that we must undertake the process of redistricting. Because this decision has an effect on you as a registered voter in the Hanford Joint Union High School District, we would like to personally invite you to participate in the process to ensure that your concerns are addressed.

We therefore, encourage you to attend the public hearings scheduled at 6 p.m. September 27 and 6 p.m. October 11. Both public hearings will be at the District Office located at 823 W. Lacey Blvd. in Hanford, California.

This is an opportunity for you to address the Board with your support, concerns, suggestions and any other comments you may have on the redistricting plan.

All materials relating to the redistricting plan are available 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday thru Friday and may be obtained by calling or visiting the Hanford Joint Union High School District Office at 823 W. Lacey Blvd., Hanford, CA 93230.

The information can also be found on our website at http://www.hjuhsd.k12.ca.us/board.htm#redistricting. We would like to thank you for your continued support and cooperation and look forward to seeing you at the public hearings.

HHS Presents "Little Shop of Horrors"

The Hanford High School Drama Department will present Little Shop of Horrors May 5 through 7 at the Stratton L. Tarvin Presentation Center. Performances begin at 7 p.m.

This bizarre musical satirizes science fiction and horror films of the 1960’s and is influenced by the 1960’s Motown and Doo Wop music. The musical’s protagonist, Seymour Krelborn, is a hapless worker at Mrs. Mushnik’s Skid Row Florist Shop. By chance, Seymour stumbles upon a strange and interesting plant that he names Audrey II. Seymour’s strange and interesting new plant is just what Mushnik’s Skid Row Florist Shop needs to keep the Floral Shop in business. Overnight, Seymour finds success, fame and money. Most importantly, Seymour finds a way into the heart of his unrequited love, Audrey, his co-worker at the Floral Shop. But, to Seymour’s chagrin, he must come up with a peculiar way to feed Audrey II, which wilts and dies if not fed ... human blood! Will Seymour get the girl? Will he give in to temptation and feed Audrey II? Will Seymour risk losing the girl and destroying everything he hoped for? Come and see what Hanford High Drama has in store!

HJUHSD to introduce modified closed campuses

Hanford high schools will all have modified closed campuses starting in the 2011-2012 school year.

The Hanford Joint Union High School District Board of Trustees will consider on February 8 approval of a a new closed campus policy for Hanford High School, Hanford West High School, Sierra Pacific High School and Earl F. Johnson Continuation High School.

Under the new policy, all students will be required to stay on school grounds throughout the school day, except for juniors and seniors who meet specific eligibility requirements. Those students will be allowed to leave campus during the lunch period. No students will be allowed to leave the school grounds at any other time without written permission from parents/guardians and the school.

Traditionally, all students at HHS and HWHS have been allowed to leave campus during the lunch period. Under the new policy, juniors and seniors who wish to leave campus at lunch will need to meet specific academic, citizenship and attendance standards, which will be more specifically defined before the start of the 2011-2012 school year.

As part of the change from open to closed campuses, the District is also working on plans to partner with local vendors to expand on-campus lunch options for students. Vendors who would like more information about these potential partnerships can contact Director of Business Services Renee Willhite at 559-583-5901, ext. 3112.

Parents, students or other community members are invited to attend the February 8 meeting of the Board of Trustees or to contact the HJUHSD Superintendent's Office at 559-583-5901, ext. 3101 with questions or comments about the proposed modified closed campus policy.
